Chapter 11
Sara led the way back to the hotel. Gabe had to see about the jail and had excused himself. She couldnât tell if he liked Alma Dean or not. Why did they have to come and ruin everything?
Of course, there was the problem with the children, and to be honest, she wasnât really sure Gabe was the one for her. But with Alma Dean here, well, the contest was on. She was going to turn his head so that all he could see was her.
That Alma Dean, sitting next to him the way she did. Mother must have coached her on how to wile a man away from another. Couldnât they see Gabe belonged to her? She sighed. Father was no help at all. He just sat there watching.
If she never saw Alma Dean again, it wouldnât be too soon. That she would see her every time she looked in the mirror was bad enough. And the way Alma had asked in such a sickly sweet voice about seeing the children and Martha made Saraâs blood boil. Oh, she was mad.
âSara, slow down,â Father called to her and brought the family to the hotel before she could open the door. âMother and I feel that you and Alma can share a room. Itâs been some time since we spent a night together in a hotel. I think it will be good for us.â
Alma frowned. âWe want you to be happy. I wonât mind if Sara wonât.â
Sara glared at Alma. âIt will be fine.â
Father nodded. âGood. You two run ahead and lock yourself in your room. I saw a nice little church atop the hill. Your mother and I are going for a walk.â
Sara huffed. âHave a good time.â She glanced at Alma and wanted to wipe the sweet smile from her face. They might be identical, but Sara didnât think her smile ever looked as sweet as Almaâs. Of course, it could be because Saraâs were usually outside appearances only. Many times, she had to admit she smiled sweetly to get what she wanted. Once they got to the room, she was going to have it out with Alma.
She ran up the stairs, confident that Alma would take her slow time, but was surprised that her sister was hot on her heels. Sara unlocked the door and went inside. Alma was right behind her.
Sara threw her reticule on the bed. âI was surprised you kept up with me.â
âI thought you might lock me out of the room.â Alma put her reticule on the dresser. Iâll have to wait to change for bed after Mother and Father return. My bag is in their room.â
Sara sat on the chair by the window. âYou can borrow some from me. Wonât be the first or last time youâve done that.â
Alma put her hands on her hips. âWhy are you so against me?â
Sara glared at her. âI guess Iâd like to have some time when I donât have a shadow following me wherever I went.
